Lubricant Formulations A Guide to Water Based Silicone and Hybrid
Selecting a lubricant is a science. Water-based lubricants are the most versatile, safe to use with all sex toy materials (especially silicone), and easy to clean. However, they tend to absorb into the skin and may require reapplication. Silicone-based lubes are longer-lasting, supremely slick, and water-resistant, making them ideal for shower play, but they are not compatible with silicone toys as they can degrade the material. Hybrid lubricants combine the best of both: a water-based formula with a small amount of silicone for longer-lasting slickness that remains safe for most silicone toys. For those with sensitivities, organic and glycerin-free water-based options are widely available. The cardinal rule is to never use oil-based lubricants (like coconut oil, Vaseline) with latex condoms, as they cause breakdowns, or with porous toys, as they degrade the material. A high-quality lubricant reduces friction, increases sensation, and protects sensitive tissue.
